After a delay of more than a month, Microsoft has finally begun rolling out Windows 10 October 2018 Update, after being hit by bugs that caused the company to pull the update offline.
To recall, Microsoft had pulled the Windows 10 October 2018 Update after reports the update was deleting data of users. It later restarted the rollout of a patched version to Windows 10 Insider Preview members, and is only now re-releasing the update starting with commercial customers from Tuesday, November 13.
Microsoft has promised significant changes in the way it approaches quality issues, including better communication with its users. According to the tech giant, the "data destroying" bug that delayed the release of the so called October 2018 Update has been thoroughly investigated.
In a blog post, Microsoft's John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, said, "While the April Update had the fastest Windows 10 update rollout velocity, we are taking a more measured approach with the October Update, slowing our rollout to more carefully study device health data. We will offer the October Update to users via Windows Update when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience. If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved, even if you 'Check for updates', so you avoid encountering any known problems. For those advanced users seeking to install the update early by manually using 'Check for updates' in settings, know that we are slowly throttling up this availability, while we carefully monitor data and feedback."
Apart from the data destroying bug, several other bugs popped up. These include a ZIP file bug that was related to extracting/ pasting files from a ZIP archive when using the native Windows File Explorer tool. If a user tries to extract or paste a file (let's say, gadgets360.jpg) from inside a ZIP archive into another folder containing another file with the same name (gadgets360.jpg), they will not be given an overwrite prompt. Instead, the destination folder file's modified date changes, but the file is not replaced at all.
There was also a bug in the patch for those computers that had managed to install the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, that was causing BSOD on HP workstations and computers.

Apple's Champs Elysees Launch Greeted With Protests Over Tax Practices

Highlights

  • Activists from the tax campaign group Attac carried out the protests
  • The protestors chanted "Apple, pay your taxes!"
  • The group had staged a sit-in at Apple's Paris store in December 2017
The launch of an Apple store on the Champs Elysees in Paris was greeted Sunday by a protest against the US multinational's controversial fiscal practices.
Activists from the tax campaign group Attac gathered on the celebrated boulevard, wearing coloured wigs and party hats, throwing confetti and chanting: "Apple, pay your taxes!"
The group had staged a sit-in at Apple's flagship Paris store in December 2017, and in February a French court declined to approve a ban on such actions following a request by the US computer giant.
"We have come to celebrate in our own way the inauguration of Apple's Champs Elysees store, to remind people that Apple is one of the biggest tax evaders in the world," Attac spokeswoman Aurelie Trouve told AFP at the protest, which featured a brass band.
Apple, the first US company to attain $1 trillion (roughly Rs. 71.9 lakh crores) in market capitalisation, grew in part owing "to the fact that it extorts billions of euros from citizens, notably European and French, through fiscal evasion of its profits, first in Ireland and now in Jersey," the spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile security personnel allowed customers to enter the new store to a boisterous welcome by Apple employees.
Attac - the Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions and Citizens Action - criticises French President Emmanuel Macron for failing to tackle multinational tax practices.
French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has pushed for a Europe-wide tax policy on computer giants such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple but Ireland, which attracts such companies, is opposed while EU heavyweight Germany has voiced only lukewarm support for the French initiative.

Highlights

  • Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 may launch in Indonesia first
  • It is set to launch in Indonesia on December 11
  • Render leak suggests a Pixel 3 XL-like display notch
Asus launched the ZenFone Max Pro M1 earlier this year, and the smartphone has been a serious contender in the budget smartphone market in India ever since. The company has now confirmed that it is set to launch the successor ZenFone Max Pro M2 smartphone on December 11. Asus has confirmed that it is launching the smartphone in Indonesia on the mentioned date. Earlier, the company had made available the ZenFone Max Pro M1 first in India, and as of now, no Indian launch event has been leaked or announced.
The Asus Indonesia Twitter handle has announced that the ZenFone Max Pro M2 will launch on December 11 in the country. The company has also touted the device to be a gaming phone hinting at powerful innards, and efficient heat dissipation technology. Apart from this, the company's tweet reveals little else. There's a low-resolution render that has also been leaked on the Google Play Console's device catalogue. The listing comes with the name Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2, and the model number ASUS_X01BD_1. The render shows the front of the device only, and it tips a display notch, on-screen navigation buttons, and a slight chin at the bottom of the display. The render was spotted by XDA Developers first. To recall, the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 ₹ 8,199 did not have a display notch up front, and it sports a dual camera setup at the back and a rear fingerprint scanner at the back.
The Google Play Console listing has also outed some specifications, and it suggests that the device will run on Android 8.1 Oreo, and pack 6GB RAM. It is worth noting that the listing comes with a warning that reads, 'device specifications are provided by the manufacturer and have not been confirmed'.
Previous leaks suggest that the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 may sport a triple camera setup, and come in two variants - the ZenFone Max Pro M2 ZB631KL and ZenFone Max M2 ZB633KL. The ZenFone Max Pro M2 ZB631KL is said to come with 6-inch full-HD+ display, triple rear camera setup, 13-megapixel selfie camera, 4GB RAM, 32GB/ 64GB onboard storage, and a Snapdragon 660 SoC. The ZenFone Max M2 ZB633KL is also rumoured with identical specifications, except a dual rear camera setup and a Snapdragon 636 SoC

AirPods Long-Term Review

 AirPods Long-Term Review
It's been a little over two years since Apple unveiled the AirPods, which marked the company's foray into the personal wireless audio space (not counting the Beats products). The AirPods design felt totally weird at the time, as if someone had snipped the wires of Apple's EarPods and left them to dangle from your ears, like two spoons without the handles.
The Internet of course showed no mercy and the inevitable jokes and memes came flooding in. To make matters worst, Apple's shiny white ear hooks faced production delays and they finally went on sale in the US only in December 2016, three months after they were announced.
Fast forward to 2018 and it's very clear that Apple is having the last laugh as the AirPods have been a huge hit, despite their relatively high price tag of $159 in the US and Rs. 12,900 in India. In a recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook — echoing his earlier comments — said that the AirPods have been a “runaway hit”. That's no surprise given it's now commonplace to see people trotting around the city with AirPods in their ears in the US, and this trend is catching up in India too.
AirPods have become an integral part of our lives here are Gadgets 360, so much so that after our smartphones, this is the next piece of tech many of us don't leave our homes without. We've been using them for a long time now and we feel it's a good time to take a closer look at what makes them so special.

AirPods design and features

The design of the AirPods might have been the butt of many jokes when they debuted, but it's safe to say now that they are easily one of the best — if not the best — designed truly wireless earphones around. The fact that the world's second largest smartphone manufacturer only recently announced a blatant copy of the AirPods — with another Chinese company following as well — is testament to the design's success. This success hinges on a couple of things.
First, is the form factor. AirPods are incredibly light thanks to the all-plastic construction, but this doesn't make them any less durable. Our AirPods have survived multiple drops over the years and surprisingly, they haven't picked up many noticeable scratches or scuffs marks either. The capsule-like charging case they ship with is also minuscule and easily fits into your pockets without creating an unsightly bulge.
The plastic case is equally durable and has survived many drops too, though it does pick up scratches rather easily. To avoid this, you can dress up you AirPods case with a skin or a little rubber jacket to keep it shiny and scuff-free, though it's definitely not something you need to do.

AirPods performance and battery life

Pairing the AirPods with an iPhone or iPad is a simple process. Simply bring the AirPods (in the case) near your device and open the lid. Almost instantly, you'll see an image of the AirPods pop up on your screen. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and you're all set.
If you have multiple Apple devices — iPads, iPhones, Macs, or Apple Watches — associated with the same iCloud ID, the AirPods would be automatically added under Bluetooth devices on them as well, eliminating the need of manually pairing with each one individually. This in itself is a major win.
Once paired, the AirPods really begin to shine. Both earbuds have a touch sensitive area along the base of the neck, which can be programmed to do different functions. By default, a double tap will summon Siri but you can change this to play/ pause, previous track, next track track, or simply not do anything at all. What we really miss is physical controls for adjusting the volume. Technically, you can ask Siri to do this, but it's not the quickest solution especially when there's ambient noise around.
However, the really cool bit is having the ability to assign different functions for the touch gestures based on the Apple device you're connected to. For instance, we typically use gestures for controlling music playback when connected to the iPhone, and have Siri summoned when we're connected to the MacBook. That's because these settings are remembered on individual devices and not on the AirPods themselves.
The music or video playback stops when you take off one of the earbuds, which is also super useful, and something we find ourselves using a lot whenever someone walks up to us to have a quick conversation. If you take off both the earbuds at the same time while connected to a MacBook though, the audio stops playing from the AirPods and switches over to the built-in speakers of the laptop.
Airpods apps ndtv AirPodsYou can set a different touch gesture for the AirPods for every Apple device you use them with

The AirPods work just like any other Bluetooth headphones on other devices too. We've been using them on and off with plenty of Android phones that we've tested and haven't had any issues. Some of the touch gestures that you set on the iPhone work with Android phones too, which is great. You can skip tracks and use the play/ pause gesture, but if you've assigned one of them to wake up Siri, don't expect it to bring up Google Assistant. Other features like music automatically pausing when you take one of the earphones out does not work with non-Apple devices either.
All these fancy gestures are fun but what about audio quality? We're just going to come out and say it — the AirPods are not the best sounding pair of Bluetooth earphones at this price, but that's fine because they are about more than pure audio quality.
The weakest part of the sound is the lack of good bass. They don't sound completely flat but if you're looking for that thump in your movies or EDM tracks, you're not going to find it here. Having said that, they do deliver excellent detail in the mid-range and instrument separation is handled with great aplomb. Treble is generally crisp and detailed, although at times we've found it to get a little too sharp and sibilant.
Coming back to the lower frequencies, the AirPods can handle gentle bass notes well, which is often enough. Due to the lack of any sort of ambient sound isolation though, we've often had to bump up the volume higher than usual. The AirPods can get really loud, but at higher volumes the highs begin to sound a little shrill and can get fatiguing.
The AirPods might lack any official IP rating for sweat resistance but none of us have had any problems on that front despite using them during workouts and in the rain. The white colour of the AirPods and the case has also aged very well, with no noticeable yellowing or discolouration. You will need to clean the insides of the case — near where the top of the AirPods rest while being charged —as it somehow manages to pick up dirt very easily. If you're not regular with this, it will likely leave a permanent mark.
The AirPods handles voice calls very well too, where we and the callers are able to hear each other quite clearly. We haven't noticed any audio-video sync issues either when watching videos and playing games.
The AirPods also have excellent wireless range when paired with some of the newer Apple hardware. We are able to use them across rooms without any issues. With our ageing MacBook Air and non-Apple devices though, we noticed that the range is about the same as other Bluetooth earphones. This is likely down to the latest Apple devices being optimised to work better with the W1 chip inside the AirPods.

New iPhone XS 2018 release date, price & specs

September 22, 2018 0

The iPhone XS and XS Max are available!

Apple has, after many rumours and some last-minute leaks, unveiled its iPhones for 2018. There are three upgrade choices this year: the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, which  went on sale at Apple Stores around the globe on the morning of Friday 21 September.
In addition to the XS and XS Max is the iPhone XR, which won't go on sale until 26 October, with pre-orders starting on 19 October.
Here we'll talk about the XS handsets here, and can find everything you need to know about the cheaper iPhone XR here.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, Apple has built upon the iPhone X rather than updating the iPhone 8. So new and old models look the same at a glance. Check our iPhone XS Max versus iPhone X comparison so you can see just how much better the new phones are. We also have an iPhone 8 vs iPhone XS and an iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone XS Max comparison.
You can consider the XS the direct upgrade from the X, but the XS Max adds a brand new option with the biggest screen yet seen on an iPhone at 6.5 inches.
Yes, you read that right: not XS Plus, but XS Max. We're into the second decade of iPhone now, so it's reasonable that Apple wants to change its naming strategy. It says it's because the screen is bigger than the 5.5 inch display on an iPhone Plus, but it's also because it is extending its vision of what the iPhone X started. Jonny Ive's words, those, not ours. Most people are likely to pronounce it "excess" rather than "ten ess", but the latter is the correct way of course.
Here are highlights of the new features:
  • A12 Bionic processor
  • IP68 rated
  • Updated 12Mp cameras
  • Adjustable depth of field in photos
  • 512GB storage option
  • Dual-SIM
The UK Tech Weekly Podcast discuss the iPhone XS in episode 102:

Release date and pre-orders

The new phones, both XS and XS Max, began to ship to those who had pre-ordered their iPhone on 21 September.
Some people received their phone as expected on launch day, while others (in the US) have been disappointed to discover that their iPhone delivery has been pushed back from being delivered on Friday 21 September to Monday 24 September. It sees that UPS has pushed back some deliveries.
Pre-orders of the iPhone XS Mac sold out pretty quickly, so some Apple fans chose to queue up outside Apple Stores around the globe on Friday 21 September. The first Apple Store sales happened in Australia. There were the usual queues at Regent Street, Covent Garden and other Apple Stores in the UK, where the phone went on sale at 7am.
If you want to get your hands on a new iPhone but didn't fancy queueing and missed the pre-order, you may still be able to pre-order on Apple's website (although some models now have a delivery date three weeks away), or you could try your luck at one of the networks and resellers listed below.

iPhone XS design and specifications

As this is an 'S' model, no-one will be surprised that the design is the same as the iPhone X. That means your existing cases will fit: buttons and ports are in the same places.
It's made from the same surgical-grade stainless steel, but the screen and rear glass has a new formulation of glass which Apple says is the toughest ever used in a phone.
iPhone XS & XS Max specs, features, cameras
Water-resistance has been improved to IP68, up from IP67, so you can leave it submerged at a depth of 2m for 30 minutes. And it won't just survive fresh water, Apple has also tested it in orange juice, tea, wine, beer and salt water.
  • iPhone XS: 143.6x70.9x7.7mm, 177g
  • iPhone XS Max: 157.5x77.4x7.7mm, 208g

Screen

The XS' screen is a minor upgrade to the iPhone X's. Resolution remains the same, as does the 5.8-inch diagonal, but contrast is improved to 1,000,000:1, which Apple says gives is a 60 percent greater dynamic range.
The iPhone XS Max is just.. bigger. It shares the same design but has a 6.5-inch screen in a body that's roughly the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus. That's a whole inch more, a real boon for those who can live with physically larger phone as this is now one of the biggest screens on any phone.
iPhone XS & XS Max specs, features, cameras
In order to maintain the same pixel density as the iPhone XS, resolution is higher at 2688x1242 pixels.
Both screens have the same list of features, though:

  • 3D Touch
  • Tap to wake
  • True Tone
  • Wide Colour
  • 120Hz touch layer
  • 625 nits max. brightness

Performance

The new A12 Bionic processor has a similar configuration to the A11 with a six-core CPU and a quad-core GPU. However, it's the first to be manufactured using a 7nm process and this is one of the reasons it's considerably faster than the A11.
Apple says the new Neural Engine is an octa-core chip that can process 5 trillion operations per second, considerably up from the 600 billion which the A11 could handle.
In practice this means apps launch up to 30 percent faster, but apps which use machine learning also benefit from this extra performance.

They can use real-time machine learning for better depth detection in Portrait mode and better mapping of Animojis in FaceTime.
FaceID is also quicker thanks to faster algorithms and it runs on a faster version of the secure enclave.

Cameras

On the surface, specs look the same as the iPhone X, as do the cameras themselves, but the main sensor in the wide-angle camera is bigger and houses larger pixels.
iPhone XS & XS Max specs, features, cameras

Smart HDR is one highlight of the new camera features.  With the extra power on tap, it takes 9 rather than a mere 4 photos simultaneously. The extra four "inter-frames" deliver even better HDR shots.
A more noticeable difference from the iPhone X's shots is that bokeh has also been improved to look more like the effect you get from a big-lens SLR camera. More importantly, you can now change the depth of field after the photo when you tap Edit.

Hardware

Keen to appeal to those who want a dual-SIM phone, Apple is at last offering an eSIM alongside the physical SIM tray. This is new technology for iPhone, but eSIMs have been in Apple Watch and iPad for some time.

Only in China will you be able to buy a true dual-SIM iPhone which takes two physical cards. Both the Chinese model and those using an eSIM work using the dual-standby tech that many dual-SIM phones already use, letting you seamlessly switch between two numbers at any time.
Battery life has been improved, and Apple says the iPhone XS and XS Max have biggest ever batteries in an iPhone. Expect 30 minutes longer runtime from the iPhone XS than an iPhone X. The XS Max will last 90 minutes longer than the iPhone X.
